“Lifetime achievement awards”
Posted by: John Beer - Sep 14, 2:11pm
Hello,
I would just like to say that I think that Mr Charlie Watkins of W-E-M is well deservid if this award, for his fantastic contributions to the music industry. The inventor of the tape echo Watkins Copicat echo units that were made by the tens of thousands. Soon followed by other manufactures, but it was his original design from 1958. Also the first to produce large concert PA rigs, any stage during the 60's - 70's would have a WEM PA setup. Now at close to 90 years old the man is still working and manufacturing Watkins / WEM Echo units, amplifiers and equipment. From the early 1950's through to today a span of nearly 60 years, if that is not a lifetime achievement, then nothing is.
Thanks Johnn Beer

Reference CHARLIE WATKINS.
Few individuals have played such a monumental part in the shaping of the pop/rock music revolution which started in the late fifties. Charlie Watkins and his Copicat were very much the 'sound of the sixties' and he is justifiably known as the 'father of modern PA'. Some of his other products like the Rapier guitar and the Dominator amp have become iconic examples of British originality.
Always a quiet innovator rather than a man seeking personal promotion, Charlie has constantly been working away in the background whilst the others were receiving the accolades.
Retirement is a word which is not in his vocabulary. Let's now show how much we appreciate his energy and generosity of spirit and for the unstinting service he has given to the music industry for the past 60 years.
My vote goes to Charlie every time!
