New Yamaha DM2000 has Optocore network transport
Danny Greenspoon, owner of The Audio Truck Inc., has upgraded his new OB truck with a Yamaha DM2000 console configured around an Optocore fibre optic transport network.
For the past 12 years the Canadian company has worked for a diverse range of clients performing live broadcasts, big events and music editing. Greepsoon is a veteran engineer and multi-platinum producer and engineer who has won four Juno Awards and two Gemini Awards.
The new board and Optocore network in the truck will help Greenspoon make quick switchovers on multiple artist shows without sacrificing the sonic quality of the projects.
The use of remote mic preamps and fibre optic cabling was installed to ease handling and improve audio quality by capturing it at the source, even at distances up to 500 ft. away.
An Optocore DD32E network device receives all AES outputs from Yamaha's AD8HR head amp via 15 lb., 150 m reel of Optocore tactical grade fibre cable with Expanded Beam connectors in the trucks patch bay. The complete system is a five node dual redundant ring where the other four network devices are Optocore DD4ME MADI interfaces for a Pro Tools rig. Another DD32E that feeds a Tascam X48 backup recorder and two sets of YG/YS interface cards are installed in the trucks two DM2000’s.
Optocore’s emulation software allows the user to control the gain of the preamps on the stage - invisibly from the desk. Additional system features allow the use of the stage box’s DD32E’s composite Video In/Out connectivity to keep a close eye on the events on the stage on monitors in the truck.
Greenspoon said of the new system, “I can’t believe that with one finger I can lift a 500 ft. snake that can do 256 channels where before my 48 channel snake was at least a two person lift and only went 300 ft. and didn’t sound as good
“I was shocked when I plugged in the system for the first time and really listened. It was unsettlingly clean and instantly perceivable as quieter but still remained transparent.”
Danny’s investment in Optocore now allows him to further support his work with CTV Broadcast, who recently bought the first of three extensive Optocore systems that will connect its downtown Queen Street studio, mid-town MTV Canada studio and suburban broadcast center.
