The broadcast industry is getting increasingly excited as the inaugural Fast Turnaround TV conference quickly approaches and the line-up is finalised with The X Factor and a broadcasting Guinness World Record featuring prominently.
The event, which takes place on March 13th at the Soho Hotel in London, is organised by TVBEurope and is a trade conference providing those in the industry of live and as-live programming a more in-depth look at the production and strategy behind fast-turnaround TV encompassing large-scale productions across music, entertainment and news.
The conference line-up has already caught the interest of many in the industry. It will include Andrew Ioannou, ITV’s Director of Strategy, Technology, Platforms and Business Delivery, as its keynote speech and will also see in-depth case studies from Mediaset Italy and NRK Norway along with European case studies involving workflows from the events sponsors Dalet, Quantel and Sony.
Ioannou will outline how live event-driven TV programming has become the cornerstone of the largest UK commercial broadcaster’s schedule. He will also explain to the audience how ITV is adding value to must-watch television events by harnessing PC/TV convergence, mobile devices, social media and micropayment. In particular he will make reference to the final of The X Factor 2011.
Mediaset is Italy’s largest commercial broadcaster. In 2011 it began a project which sought to centralise and streamline all TV news operations. This included the launching of a 24/7 news channel which was launched in 2011.

At Fast Turnaround TV Mediaset will be used as a case study to explain how they introduced the Dalet newsroom, production and playout tools in Milan for Studio Aperto. It will also consider its adoption of a newsgathering hub for the 24/7 channel which included all 10 of Mediaset’s regional stations.
In addition, Fast Turnaround TV attendees will get to see how NRK Norway managed to set a broadcasting Guinness World Record which also became a massive media event. In Summer 2011, the government-owned Norwegian broadcaster founded in 1933, broadcasted a programme which lasted 134 hours 42 minutes and 45 seconds. This was the longest live television documentary in history.
The programme followed the Hurtigruten (literally Express Route) sea journey which follows Norway’s western and northern coast every day on the leg between Bergen and Kirkenes. The trip took in some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and the documentary attracted 65 per cent of Norway’s population on TV and via the web. It also received 12 million Facebook views, 22,000,000 impressions on Twitter and was streamed in 179 countries.
Thomas Hellum, the Project Manager for the programme broadcast in June 2011, will explain to attendees how NRK produced the 5-day event from a moving vessel at sea whilst live on TV and the internet.
