Part of the fabric network of night clubs, Matter, a new 32,737 sq ft venue, is set to open its doors tomorrow night (19/9) inside the 02 Arena complex in the Docklands. Fabric owners Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie led the multimillion-pound project. The main sound system for the club is based around a Martin Audio W8L Longbow line array. Matter’s VIP lounge will feature Void Acoustics Air Motion, Airten, Axys and Mycro loudspeaker systems. Void supplied over 30 loudspeakers for the area, which features a dance floor and seven private-entertainment booths. Two custom-designed bass enclosures – the Axsys X, a 2 x 18-inch multiple resonant chamber design, and the compact 2 x 12-inch Mycro are housed in the area.
The dance floor contains two pairs of Void's signature Air Motion triple-horn mid/highs combined with four Axys X subs with Airten twin-coil units used for infills and DJ monitors. The private boots in the area feature an Airten unit and a Mycro X that has been specially designed to fit under the booth furniture. The Micro X features two 12-inch drivers in a space that usually fits only one driver, thus increasing the subs power to 1500 Watts.
Dave Parry of Most Technical saw the Void speakers at PLASA and was impressed with their unique design and sonic qualities. He commented: “Matter is a very special venue, and we didn’t want to specify conventional loudspeakers for the VIP area – its whole up-market vibe called for something much more dramatic, with the look being very important. Void has applied custom finishes to the loudspeakers for us, and they look amazing! Fortunately, Void’s products sound every bit as good as they look, and were an obvious choice. At Most Technical, we specialise in high-quality, immersive sound systems, with the emphasis very much on the music – Void’s loudspeakers fit our ethos perfectly.
“The upstairs VIP area at Matter gave us some design challenges, but the final sound design is fairly straightforward, using a triple-horn Air Motion at each corner of the dance floor, plus the big subs. There are also around fifteen of Void’s Airten units providing additional distributed coverage – as fills and in the booths. Together with the output from the Mycro X subs, the club has massive amounts of power available for this area, but with consistent high-level quality wherever you go – a seamless result throughout. We’re very pleased with both the aesthetics and musical delivery of the system, and Matter’s VIP area is the first of many projects that we hope to be working on with Void.”

Alex Skan, director of Void Acoustics, commented: “This is a significant project for Void, and an important new club for London. We are delighted to be involved, and pleased that the flexibility of having our own manufacturing facility enabled us to develop two loudspeaker designs specifically for the project, with custom finishes to suit the club’s interior design. The Mycro X redefines the term ‘powerful compact’ and represents something of a breakthrough in generating high-level low frequency performance from small enclosures.”
The veunue will host its launch party with performances by UNKLE, Late Of The Pier and Iglu + Hartley.
