ISE 2012: HARMAN showcases dbx Equalizers, Compressors and Crossovers

HARMAN showcased its dbx S series of graphic equalizers, compressors and crossovers at this year’s Integrated Systems Europe event in Amsterdam.

ISE 2012, which took place between January 31st and February 2nd, saw the next generation of the high-performance pro audio signal processors by the American-based manufacturer HARMAN.

HARMAN—who also own brands including AKG, JBL, and Mark Levinson—have now got a range of seven models in the dbx S range. All of the current models include a platinum front panel.

dbx Graphic Equalizers

The three-model dbx S series of graphic equalizers currently contains the 231s dual 31-band, 215s dual 15-band and 131s single 31-band.

All these graphic equalizers have been designed to provide exceptional sound whilst also retaining rugged reliability. Each of the models offer 1/3 octave constant Q equalization with switchable boost/cut ranges of ±6 or ±12dB, with a ±12dB input gain range.

What is more, the 231s, 215s and 131s all feature 4-segment LED ladder meters. These provide easy indication of output levels. Furthermore, their 20mm nonconductive sliders enable smooth, quiet operation.

Equally, all models include XLR and ¼ inch TRS inputs and outputs and offer a frequency response of <10Hz to >50kHz with greater than 108dB dynamic range.

dbx Compressors

The two-model dbx S series of compressors currently includes the 266xs compressor/gate and 166xs compressor/limiter/gate.

Both the 266xs and 166xs include the patented Overeasy compression technology. This smoothes out fluctuating vocal and instrumental levels in a transparent fashion.

What is more, each includes dbx’s AutoDynamic scalable program-dependent attack and release controls. These continually adjust the actual attack and release time to match the program material. This is in contrast to standard compressors that only provide pre-set attack and release functionality.

dsx’s 266xs and 166xs also allow users the  classic “hard-knee” compression. Furthermore users can manually and precisely adjust threshold, ratio, attack, release and output gain. The smoothest release characteristics are made available by the inclusion of new gate timing algorithms.

Both models also have the capacity to be used in stereo or dual-mono mode. They also include balanced inputs and outputs with XLR and ¼-inch TRS connectors, along with a TRS side chain insert.

dbx Crossovers

There is also the two-model dbx S series of crossovers which currently incorporates the 234s/234xs stereo 2-way/mono 3-way/mono 4-way crossover and 223s/223xs stereo 2-way/mono 3-way crossover.

Both models uses the industry-standard Linkwitz-Riley 24dB per octave filters to separate the audio signal and direct the correct frequencies to the loudspeaker drivers. This enables the systems amplifiers to operate more efficiently and, importantly, with lower distortion.

In addition, the dual-channel 234s/234xs and 223s/223xs offer independent output gain controls providing precise level matching. They also include output phase inversion, a 40Hz low-cut filter, selectable stereo/mono operation and low-frequency summing for the subwoofer output and many additional useful features.

Finally, the 234s and 223s feature 1/4-inch TRS inputs and outputs. The 234xs and 223xs provide XLR connections.
