We all need updating every now and then. On this occasion, Shanghai Oriental TV-owned Shanghai Media Group (SMG) have updated their Pudong studio with a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital audio console.
SMG’s 400 square metre Pudong studio—which is used for production of small scale variety shows—previously housed a Soundcraft B400 analogue mixer but was clearly in need of a little update and upgrade. Being one of Soundcraft’s longest-served customers, their preference was clear.
Nonetheless, the SMG project team compared the Soundcraft Vi1—a previous winner of an API Award—with a variety of competitive models. Overall, however, according to the SMG team, the Vi1stood out.
One of the most striking benefits is the simple to use interface of the surface. Due to the fact that different engineers use the studio all the time, straightforward and simple use is paramount. Thus, the Vi1’s Vistonics interface which allows users to view most of the parameters on the screens so they don’t have to scroll through menus is ideal.
Vistonics use of colour-coding as well as the FaderGlow also helps ensure that the console is highly intuitive to use.Article continues below
In addition, SMG were also impressed by the Vi1’s world-class DSP processing technology—developed as a result of Soundcraft and Studer’s many years of console expertise—ensures plenty of punch from the surface.
What is more, the inclusion of 40-bit floating point processing technology helped push the Soundcraft Vi1 ahead of the pack for the SMG project team.
All in all, this ensured that SMG’s Pudong studio now houses a bright-buttoned and fresh-fadered Soundcraft Vi1 console within its walls.
